Daphne first discovered Lake-McHenry Habitat for Humanity through seeing a social media post of a Build Day in the very neighborhood she now proudly calls home. That small spark of curiosity would change everything.
With encouragement from a friend and the guidance of Habitat staff, Daphne began volunteering. As she learned about the Homeownership Program, a dream began to take shape. Even with doubts swirling in her mind, she gathered her courage and applied, daring to hope for something better.
Life hadn’t been easy. After separating from her youngest daughter’s father, Daphne found herself unable to afford rent alone. She relocated to a neighboring town, spending hours each day commuting, shuttling her two daughters between towns and jobs, doing whatever it took to keep their little family afloat.
Daphne worked tirelessly as a bartender and had built solid credit with little debt. But like so many hardworking single parents, she existed in a frustrating gap—earning too much for rental assistance, yet not enough for a traditional mortgage. Through Habitat’s financial coaching and her own determined budgeting, she carefully balanced her income with child support until she finally reached the stability she needed.
Once accepted, Daphne poured everything into the program. Juggling three jobs while completing volunteer hours, she showed up at build sites, attended homeowner education classes, and refused to give up. Though she sometimes felt guilty about not being at every build day, she was overwhelmed with gratitude for the volunteers who appeared week after week. “I didn’t know these people,” she remembers, tears in her eyes, “but they were out there building my home.” She formed beautiful friendships on-site, and when she walks through her finished home today, she still points out the walls she helped build with pride.
The day Daphne received her keys felt like a dream. For the first time in her life, she wasn’t moving into someone else’s space—this was truly hers. The joy, the pride, the sense of accomplishment was almost too much to hold.
Since moving in, Daphne and her daughters, Emma and Lily, have flourished. Lily has never known another home. Emma, who remembers the uncertainty of their past, now has her own room painted in her favorite colors. And one of their first celebrations? Finally getting the dog and making their family feel more complete!
Homeownership brought new challenges—a property tax increase, unexpected HOA fees—but Daphne faced them head-on. Unlike the unpredictability of renting, her home was an investment in their future. The affordable mortgage even allowed her to reduce her work hours and spend more precious time with her daughters.
Today, Daphne doesn’t just live in her neighborhood, she helps build its community by organizing events and connecting neighbors. As a real estate agent, she passionately refers families to Habitat, especially those caught in the same impossible gap she once knew. “It’s not just about owning a home,” she explains. “It’s about how you become a homeowner. You earn it, and that makes all the difference.”
Without Habitat, Daphne feels certain she’d still be fighting to stay afloat. But now she doesn’t just have a house, she has a home where she and her girls can build a future. For Daphne, home means laughter with her daughters, cooking together, decorating for the holidays, and finally being able to say with absolute certainty: “This is ours.”
“Home means family. Comfort. Stability,” Daphne shares. “It’s where we belong. Where we grow. It’s knowing I always have somewhere to come home to that is mine, that is safe, and that reflects who we are. Home is knowing that my hard work brought us here—and that we did this together.”
